Green patinas hold a central place in artistic bronze casting and are historically associated with classical sculpture and the natural oxidation of the metal over time. These finishes evoke an organic character and a strong sense of aging, making them widely used in contemporary sculpture as well as in public art installations.

From a technical standpoint, green patinas are generally formulated using copper nitrate, and may include additional chemical compounds to adjust tone, chromatic depth, or surface texture. Depending on the formulation and application method, a wide range of green shades can be achieved, from lighter and bluish tones to greyer or more intense greens, with varying degrees of visual irregularity.

Application takes place after the controlled heating of the bronze surface, a crucial step to activate the chemical reaction. The patina is applied by brushing or spraying, allowing for a high level of artistic control. The reaction between the chemicals and the metal produces a permanent coloration, integrated directly into the surface of the sculpture.

This process requires technical expertise and strict safety precautions, including the use of appropriate personal protective equipment throughout the application. Each art foundry develops its own variations of green patinas through continuous research and accumulated practice, making them part of a unique body of technical knowledge.

At Mão de Fogo, the application of green patinas is approached as a sensitive and expressive process, where technique serves the artistic intent and the final identity of each bronze sculpture.
