Brown Patinas in Artistic Bronze Casting

Brown patinas are the most widely used finishes in artistic bronze casting, valued for their elegance, sobriety, and versatility. They enhance the form, volume, and texture of a sculpture, giving it a timeless appearance commonly associated with both classical and contemporary sculpture.

Through different chemical compositions and application methods, a wide range of brown tones can be achieved, from light and golden hues to reddish or darker shades. The patina is applied after heating the bronze surface—typically using a torch—and can be brushed or sprayed on. This chemical reaction creates a permanent coloration that becomes an integral part of the metal surface.

Applying brown patinas requires technical expertise and strict safety procedures, including the use of appropriate protective equipment. Each art foundry develops its own patina formulas, the result of years of experience and experimentation, making this process an essential part of traditional foundry craftsmanship.

At Mão de Fogo, patination is seen as the final stage where technical mastery and artistic expression come together to define the identity of each bronze sculpture.
