In stainless steel, finishing is decisive. Highly polished surfaces reflect the surrounding environment and dissolve the form into its context; brushed or satin finishes create a more contained and readable presence; raw finishes reveal the manufacturing process and align with an industrial language.


Unlike bronze, it does not allow for chemical patinas in the classical sense. The final surface is what the material is — not something applied to it. This material directness demands conceptual clarity: in stainless steel, the surface is never neutral.


Casting processes and indirect costs


Stainless steel casting is technically more complex than most artistic casting processes. It requires high-performance refractory materials, specialised equipment and experienced teams.


The cost lies not only in the metal itself, but in process control and the often time-consuming finishing stage. However, this initial demand can be offset by exceptional stability and virtually nonexistent maintenance costs over the lifespan of the work.


Common mistakes in its use


A frequent error is choosing stainless steel solely for its durability, without integrating that decision into the formal language of the work. Another is treating it as an “eternal version” of bronze, retaining formal solutions designed for a different material.


It is also common to underestimate the impact of finishing: in stainless steel, small surface decisions can radically transform how the piece is perceived.


Practical conclusion


Stainless steel casting makes sense when a project consciously embraces precision, permanence and the direct exposure of the material.


It is not suitable for all artistic languages or contexts, but is highly coherent when artistic intent aligns with its clarity of material expression.
